Our last day at Flathead Lake was a good one. Last night my girlfriend and colleague Lori Wilson joined us for dinner at the campsite. It was great to get caught up with her. She was a sales rep for a company called Property ID Disclosure company which I used all of the time in California as a natural hazard disclosure company. She now works for Fidelity National Title in Kalispell, MT as their sales rep. She says that things have been quite a bit different now because of COVID. Her job is basically to outreach the real estate agents and try to convince them to use Fidelity as their clients' title company. Obviously no one wants to see Lori in person until this mess is over. So for now, she is just biding her time and waiting to see what her job will become.
Lori was kind enough to bring her kayak for me to use.
I know, I know, we didn't practice social distancing. It is hard to do that with a survivor of Katrina and the always effervescent Lori Wilson. She's a one of a kind!!
I forgot to mention this very interesting place we stopped into yesterday after our visit to Polson. It was on the way home and can only be described as an old fashioned souvenir store, or should I say stores. The place spanned about 5 different buildings, each one specializing in something or other. The most interesting part was the one devoted to down quilts and pillows. Then there was one that had tons of socks and slippers, then there was one that had all kinds of candy, and I can't remember the rest. It went on and on.
The owner was a fellow named Bob who was the most magnanimous and welcoming person I have seen in a long time. The Governor of Montana has mandated that you wear a mask indoors but this guy told us right from the get go that we were welcome to take off our masks if we felt comfortable. We didn't initially until he offered us a free bottle of ginger ale. Then he took us (along with another party of 5) into his little Theater and put on a show and played a song for us on his accordion. Here is his "Theater":
Here is a picture of the guy and us. Again, no social distancing.
The whole time he was entertaining us I was trying to figure out if his hair was a rug or not.
We bought a few gifts at his store. Russ got me one.
It's a beach towel in the shape of a DOD skull!!
Now to the healthy stuff. Today (Thursday) I went for a 3 mile run, kayaked in Lori's kayak (twice) and went swimming briefly in Flathead Lake. Pretty good, huh?
And yes, I did get out to that island, all the way around it and back to the beach again. I also was able to check out the rich people's homes from the lake. It kind of reminded me of the way the CA state park at Sunnyside is right in the middle of some pricey homes. There is money everywhere. And you know what? I'm okay with it. I have enough with what I have. Don't know what I would do with anymore. But if people need it, more power to them.
Tomorrow we leave Flathead Lake and try to find a campsite close enough so that we can visit Glacier Park. We may have trouble as we are looking on a Friday and it happens to be the Friday of the holiday weekend. Fingers crossed. We generally try to get to a place by Thursday at 2 pm. So we will see.
I can't let this day go by without thinking back to a year ago when I had just arrived at St. Jean Pied du Port in France where I spent 2 nights preparing to walk the Camino. The memories are still so fresh. I hope that they will always be.
