Journey into Hell’s Canyon August 8, 2020

Oh boy.  Woke up this morning and after nightmares of falling off the side of the canyon wall I was determined to not make the visit.  But adventure called and we drove up to the top of the canyon on this skinny dirt road and were rewarded with some pretty spectacular views.  I am pretty sure that 99.9% of the citizens of this country have not nor will ever see this.  Thanks so much Betsy and Ron for recommending it!

It is a spot, on the Oregon Idaho border where the Snake (sorry Jody) River has been dammed up and made a reservoir/lake.

The road is twisty, windy and steep but very well maintained.  If we had met another vehicle at a certain point, it would have been tight.  We only met one other little car (Subaru) so had no problems.  It seems that getting up early for the trip was worthwhile.

The rest of the day we hung out in camp reading, napping and generally enjoying the wonderful weather here.  We are at about 4800 feet so nights are cool and days are pleasant.  Ceilidh and I took a couple of walks and found some wildlife along the way – smashed.

The cows continue to appear.  Idaho is a free range state so along the road this morning we chased several packs consisting of pregnant cows and yearlings.  We were their exercise for the day.  Have you ever driven behind a lumbering pregnant cow? Only to have her relieve herself in the process?  Quite the sight.  Be glad no picture.

We had to go through a town named Bear this morning to get to the Hell’s canyon road and we noticed this awesome mailbox holder.  I will have to send that picture when I have better coverage.  The waiting to upload is interminable.

Tomorrow we head back to some semblance of civilization to dump our tanks, pick up email and get this blog stuff off.
